Breaking the Rules of Formline: Inspired prints by Westcoast style

December 3, 2011

This show will showcase a small group of prints that are inspired from the Westcoast style art of the Nuu-chah-nulth and Makah people. Working with various artists in these regions including Greg Colfax (Makah) and George David (Nuu-chah-nulth) I studied this style and have been a great admire of it's freedom and power. Many people who become familiar with Native art of the Northwest Coast region familiarize themselves with art traditions of the Southeast Alaskan groups which have highly accomplished and formal training in their traditions. I have studied that region as well but found myself fascinated by little known explorations artists on the Southern spectrum were creating as they began to adopt the formline system into thier culture. The prints in this exhibition are being created intentionally at one time and will have a relationship beyond color and style. We hope you can make it to the opening. Solstice Masquerade: A Group exhibition

December 1, 2011

Every December the Stonington Gallery holds a group exhibition featuring the primary as well as new and upcoming artists of the Northwest Coast Native art tradition. This year the show will focus on masks. The plan is to include a moon mask based on a rare Puget Sound Salish example possibly using light once again as a contemporary flare. Look forward to seeing those of you who can attend.
