Since the carving tradition of this region in the Pacific Northwest was developed over generations along with the tools used I tend to use local lumber like western red cedar, red alder, yew wood and yellow cedar. Although given that wood is not lmited to availability with lumber yards and suppliers I do experiment outside of those species but not often. Red cedar is becoming scarce in recent years and the use of alder for smaller pieces suited for indoor settings is becoming popular to deal with resource management.
