Things are picking up for the Eagles Landing Hotel project. I'm here for the weekend setting up the layout crunching numbers making sure everything fits in order. Finding out how convenient the use of a digital project is last night since the space is quite narrow for how large a projection I needed to make. I originally planned on making transparencies with a grid but the digital method proved to be the most flexible with my mac scaling as needed along the wall of glass.

The video above is my first shot at using iStopmotion on my iPad and it proved to be incredible simple and effective. It has the ability to tether using an iPhone as a remote camera since it's camera built into it are far higher quality image capable. Unfortunately, the wifi bandwidth is pretty low in the hotel so they couldn't communicate hence the low resolution. As with many projects I love to share the process when possible and I promise this will get more interesting than me pacing up and down making marks on a molding base board and taking a phone call from the Project manage :) as a side note that video was done all from the iPad uploaded and labelled and all but it's nice to have the option at least to get content out quickly and given it's my first shot at it I can only get better. Thanks for visiting.

Happy Valentines Day

Hey guys, so a commission came up that gave me a chance to showcase the new 60D Canon's video capabilities along with the Screenflow application I've been waiting to use to capture my software editing action. This is a quick run down of what my glass and cedar panel work has been like since 2000. I was asked to revisit a Raven panel with slight modifications so I took the old design and made adjustments given my design senses have changed a little. It's a delicate area as the client wants the work to be very close to the original but given it's not an edition I did my best to split the difference between replicating and starting over. I normally edit using a sketch under the Illustrator artboard but because I was quite certain what I wanted to do I created a few custom brushes and modified existing elements and redistributed them througout the design. I really discourage artists who aren't familiar with the vector process in cloning their shapes as it detracts from the art. In the sped up version you'll notice that even though I repurpose shapes I modify them so not to create abosilute repetition which detracts from the movement of the design. Hope you all enjoy part of the captured design process.

On Tuesday this week I made the trip down to the Chehalis tribe's hotel, Eagles Landing, to inspect and take final measurements before finalizing the design work that will be put up on the 5'h x 40'w space. This will be my first installation to include an audio component. The inspiration behind the work has been worked on consulting the tribal elders committee regarding what is known as the 5 epic stories of the Chehalis people. The space will be divided into these 5 segments to isolate the major epics and individual characters. All throughout the work will have the theme of the river running through it by way of sand-blasted and water jet cut glass illuminated from under by LED light. There will be low relief cedar panels carved as well as aluminum cut outs. If this sounds involved, it's because it is. In the coming weeks I'm looking forward to making this a reality and documenting some of the process in various ways. We have new equipment in the studio as well as software to aid in the documentation process. Keep visiting for updates.

Valentines around the corner

Congrats everyone, we made it into 2012. I'm looking forward to what the new year brings. Already some major projects are underway in the planning phase but a lot it going to happen quickly. Work for the Chehalis tribe is taking place to create an interactive installation that will tell the tribes history in cedar, glass and metal including for the first time an audio and light component. Undoubtedly there will be updates of progress photos of what's going on in the studio. Equally important is a partnership with UW and the National Endowment of the Arts to create some educational videos that will be shared via YouTube and Vimeo. New challenges are on the horizon but it gives much to look forward to and learn from. Thanks for another year of support in being able to sustain the dream of using creativity to make an impact in the world. Happy 2012 let's make it a great one.

Killer Whale ornaments extremely limited 2011

Hello all. Part of me hates to limit such an item but I have but 10 to distibute and prefer to handle the potential orders locally in the Tacoma-Seattle area. I was working on producing a small line of ornaments this year when I discovered the manufacturer had misplaced the order and set us back here several weeks. Despite this I managed to procure some 'prototypes' which I would like to bring to your attention. My hopes are to expand on this in the coming year but for now I encourage anyone interested to email sales@qwalsiusstudios.com

The material is black pf neutral artboard that is laser cut and comes in a sturdy silver and black pendant case. The ornament measures 3 1/2"h x 4"w x 1/32"d. The box measures 6 1/2"h x 6 1/2"w x 1 1/4"d. Hope to hear from you all and look forward to creating some more of these on a larger scale for 2012. Happy holidays.

New Moon in the studio progress update

Hello all. For those who know me well know that I love to share and I mostly do that on Facebook these days. However, since moving the website to Squarespace and familiarizing myself with their work flows I find it much easier to add content and to pass it along to many outlets on the web. I'm currently working on a piece that is similar to the "Keeper of the Tide" but on a smaller scale. I'm particularly excited with this work because I'm integrating the aluminum hardware to be less intrusive and be part of the art rather than a distraction. This first set of photos shows how the bevel in the moon rim is roughed out before planing. I'll be posting more updates in the week. Until then thanks for dropping in.

Coast Salish Design Elements: seeking comments

For those of you who haven't seen the video that does an overview of Coast Salish design please check it out as it will be revisited with support from the National Endowment of the Arts in the coming months. This is also for those of you who are familiar with it and haven't already commented. My hopes are that I can script the video to briefly include who the Coast Salish people are and perhaps some select historical images as well. Aside from this I plan to do a video that covers formline illustration as it is mentioned in the video as well. All this has been on my mind recently with the final edits for an upcoming essay to be published this coming year in a collective to be published by University of Washington Press and the Bill Holm Center. I look forward to seeing what you have to say and I encourage you especially if you don't have a familiar grasp on this regional and cultural art style because it is important to educate people about it as effectively as possible for that is the goal of the project. Thank you.
