Coast Salish Artist Gathering

February 5th 2012

On Sunday February 5th 2012 the Burke Museum will host a gathering of Contemporary Coast Salish artists and scholars to discuss the art style and related issues as they pertain to the continuing of a long standing creative process. Among the artist presenting are John Marston, Jason Gobin, Qwalsius - Shaun Peterson, lessLIE and more. This event is made possible through funds from the National Endowement of the Arts which is part of a project to expand the resources available to shed light on the Coast Salish artistic tradition. For generations this art form has been largely overlooked in the Western Washington region in place of various regional styles of British Columbia and Alaska. Through the hard work and dedication of artists working in the 1980's laying ground for the next generation it is now come to a level of recognition and proven itself in all its potential to stand along side artistic practices around the world. At the dawn of the 21st century the Coast Salish art world has experienced a reawakening and is gaining momentum like never before. For more info please visit the Burke Museum events page.

Fascilitated by Bonnie Schock co-director MFA of Goddard College the discussion will include input from both artists and engage in creative dialogue with you around the many intersections of your work with issues of Ethics as related to cultural traditions and questions of ownership and appropriation. More information will be available as the date approaches. To receive information as it becomes available please sign up for our email list. Thanks.
